Proud to be an American

I remember when I first came to BYU and I thought it was so strange when I was walking to school early in the morning and all of a sudden I'd hear the National Anthem. Everyone would stop in their tracks to face the flag and place their hands over their hearts as it was raised. Then, the same thing would happen when I was walking home and the flag was lowered. I used to think this was silly and annoying, especially if I was in a hurry.

The other day I was studying when I heard the National Anthem, quiet through the library walls but still strong. I looked out the window to see the Air Force cadets respectfully lowering the flag and everyone holding still, as usual. I almost wished I were out there so I could also show my respect for the flag and my country even though it's such a simple act. Sometimes I think we don't appreciate America as much as we should, and all the effort that was involved in establishing it as a free and independent country. I've noticed that learning about the military last semester and making a greater effort to learn about our history and follow current events has made me feel much more patriotic and fiercely loyal to my country.

Here is one of the very first articles I wrote for the school paper, and one of my favorites!

Well, I'm glad you were up that early to hear the National Anthem and stop in the middle of campus while I was still sleeping my day away.... and that you were on campus that late. I forgot they do that at night, I'm not a campus girl. It's sad. But good for you for being a diligent student.
