Skylee's Help
Earlier today I was thinking about something my 3-year-old niece did this summer. Carly, Evan, Audra, and I were visiting my parents the weekend my dad was sustained as stake president. My sister, Katy, and her family were visiting too. After stake conference, we were sitting outside on the porch eating some sort of dessert. I can't remember what the dessert was, except that it included ice cream. I was on the porch swing when Skylee came over to sit next to me and lean on my lap. Something happened and she dropped her dessert on my jean shorts. I instinctively gasped and let out my frustration. I wasn't mad at Skylee but I'm sure she thought I was. She ran inside and I went after her to make sure she didn't feel bad. She found me first-with a big wad of tissue in her little fist, and came over to clean the mess off my pants. Her thoughtfulness touched me, even though she is only 3 years old. She taught me a lesson, too, about patience and love and thinking of others.

A New Passion
When I first chose the beats I would write for The Daily Universe (bookstore, police, ROTC), I never realized I would be inadvertently choosing something I felt so passionately about. No, it's not the bookstore or even the police beat (although that one's pretty sweet, too), but the military.
Growing up, I learned to appreciate and love my country, but I never really knew anything about the life of those in the military until I came to college. My roommate, TyRee's dad is a doctor in the Air Force. By the way, he's one of my heroes-he graduated valedictorian in his class at medical school in addition to being the foosball champion there, and TyRee has told me a few of his amazing doctor stories. After living with TyRee for 2 years, I've started to become familiar with a little bit of the lingo. But, now that I'm writing stories for the ROTC in the paper, I've grown to appreciate the men and women in our armed forces so much more-and I've only been doing it for 2 weeks. I've only just begun to dig into the workings of the ROTC and how cadets are trained to become leaders in our nation's military. It's hard work! And these guys here at BYU are some of the best. I love talking with them and learning more about what they do and what their goals are. I'm so glad we have people like them protecting us and our country. They're total heroes!

2nd Week of School
Well, this week wasn't as exciting for me as last week, but here are some things that went down...
1. Didn't get embarrassed or uncomfortable in my public speaking class this week...even when the teacher made everyone look at me for what felt like 5 whole minutes. Well...I got a little embarrassed when my teacher said, "Isn't she cute, class?"
2. Had dinner with Joey, Katie, and Scott.
3. Developed a small crush.
4. Had 2 more articles in the paper...and one even on the front page of The Daily Universe!
5. Met several new cool people through doing interviews-one girl told me it was a blessing to meet me.
6. Went for a long bikeride.
7. Had a picnic down at Utah Lake at sunset and went dancing in Salt Lake. Sorry the pictures are small...they're just from facebook.

8. BYU football is playing UCLA tomorrow...don't tell the BYU fans, but I've been thinking of cheering for UCLA...I can't help that they feel more like home.

Exciting things that happened this week
1. I got my first article in the (school) paper-with a byline and everything!
2. I love my new job and I feel like I'm learning a lot-not only about PR and writing, but about lots of cool things I get to write about.
3. I get to write the police beat for the school newspaper, and I get to write about the ROTC...which means I get to interact with men in uniforms. :)
4. I found out that my boss's son is the lead guitarist in the band Maroon 5.
5. I've got to meet cool people while doing interviews for my articles that I wouldn't otherwise have met.
6. I went country dancing for the first time...a little awkward, but fun.
7. I got to see Joey and Katie, and other old friends I haven't seen in a long time.
8. There was a thunderstorm.
9. I might get to see Kellie this weekend!
